The original Land Rover vintage defender, launched in 1948, was the first SUV produced by the British company and has remained in production for more than 60 years. It was sold in a range of body styles, including four-wheel drive, pickup truck and station wagon.

There have been several special editions over the years. Among them were the 50th anniversary Defenders in 1998. They were essentially NAS (North American spec) versions of the Defender 90 and 110, with a number of added features such as chequer plate wing tops and sill protection. They also came with a rear roll cage and safety devices for the front seat occupants, green tinted windows and ABS & electronic traction control.

Another special edition was the Defender Black Limited Edition in 2002. It was built in 2 variants; a 90 station wagon and a 110 double cab pick up. Both were powered by a Td5 engine and had Java black micatallic paint, ABS & Electronic Traction Control, chequer plate wing tops and sill protectors, front roll cage and Boost alloy wheels.
